When to Use
Safety Glass?

With so many types of glass to choose from, we know it can sometimes be tricky to know which glass will be best for your installation – that’s why the friendly and knowledgeable team here at Norwich Glass Company are on hand to share our expertise, to ensure you have the correct glass for your end purpose.

When we are talking to customers, we always want to ensure that your next project, for home or business, conforms to the relevant buildings regulations and one important consideration to determine is whether you need to use ‘safety glass’.

What is safety glass?
Safety glass is described as glass that has additional safety features, which means it is less likely to break or pose less of a threat or injury to humans when broken. The rules specified in the ‘The General Product Safety Regulations 2005’ state that glass fitted in domestic and commercial buildings, have ‘critical locations’, where safety glass must be fitted.

What are the ‘critical locations’?
There are three key ‘critical locations’ that will determine if you need to use safety glass:

  1. DOORS – any glazing or part glazing in a door, which is between the finished floor level and a height of 1500mm, is a ‘critical location’.
  2. SIDE PANELS TO DOORS – any glazing or part glazing of the side panel, which is within 300mm of either side of a door edge and which is between the finished floor level and a height of 1500mm above the floor level, is in a ‘critical location’.
  3. WINDOWS, PARTITIONS and WALLS – any glazing or part of that glazing, which is between the finished floor level and a height of 800mm above the floor level, is in a ‘critical location’.

The diagram below shows that areas 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will require safety glass, as they fall within the ‘critical locations’.
